SUP September – Community Building for Sustainable (Un)Professionals

We’re baaaaaack! After a short hiatus, #GreenPeopleTO is back with another series of SUP events.

If you’re new to what we do, we’re a group of young people trying to make this big city a little more friendly for everyone and anyone interested in living in a more sustainable world – whether you’re a student, working professional, entrepreneur, or still figuring it out! We strive to keep our events as basic and accessible as possible – no cover charge, little to no agenda, and cheap beverages or BYOB.

Our September event is a BYOB event for anyone whose ever thought “huh..I kinda like this planet.”

Thursday, September 24th 6-9pm @ CSI Spadina (215 Spadina Avenue, 4th Floor Lounge)

We were SUP to no good on Tuesday scheming our event series for Fall 2015. We’ll be keeping it basic through December, no agenda – just excellent vibes and a consistent flow of good conversation and beer.

Can’t wait to see everyone (and meet new friends) at our September 24th re-launch and hear what you’ve been up to this summer. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for details.

Cheers,

Turn SUP for What: A Fundraiser for Beyond Crisis

Have you ever thought to yourself “Hey, I like the environment, but I also like dancing and people.” No? Well that makes sense, it’s a pretty weird sentence to think. But now that you’ve read it, and you’ve thought about it, do you find yourself agreeing with that thought?

If you’ve been to any of our events before you know that we’re all about creating low key, relaxed spaces for people who want to make the world a more sustainable place to live in. And this time we’re throwing a concert! On Thursday, April 30th we’re hosting Gen Why, The Fox and Moon, and Gaiasi for what should prove to be a great night of music, dancing and awesome people.

Some of you may remember BuSUP to NYC that brought five buses and 250 people from Toronto to New York for the People’s Climate March last September. In and amongst that 250 was a team of documentarians who shot hundreds of hours of footage and now we’re working to put together a documentary Beyond Crisis! Proceeds from this event will go to helping get the film through it’s last legs of production.

Check out the Facebook event for more information!

SUPport the Climate: NEB Application & Bar Times

10258887_10203075953293797_8588637261134132134_o

We’re working with Toronto350.org once again to SUPport the climate after our fantastic collaboration with them buSUP to New York City last fall for the People’s Climate March.

Our friends over at Toronto350.org have been working hard all month getting applications to demand a full climate review of Energy East.

All you need to do is bring your laptop (or use one that will be on site), copy and paste the wording that calls for the NEB to accept that climate change must be a part of its evaluation of energy east. And then we’ll all head out to grab a drink around the corner at the Duke of York.

Come SUPport the climate with us this Friday, February 27th at Friend’s House!

What’SUP 2015?

10929183_10202857308547815_7434853854573729870_o

We’ve had a great year in 2014, and we’re ready for what’s in store for 2015! Thank you to everyone who’s supported our little gatherings and making it what it is today. Our little idea hatched just last winter, but it has grown so much and we’ve met so many different and interesting people along the way. From our first meetup last February with representation from students and alumni across the GTA, to collaborating with York University and CSI, to bringing 300 people to New York City for the largest climate march in history with Toronto350 – we’re so excited for what this year will bring.

To start the year, we’re going back to our roots, and where it all began – Harvest Noon. Now that we’re officially a year old, we’re looking to take 2015 by storm, but to do that, we need your help! We’ve got some great ideas planned, but we want your input and ideas, and for you to let us know what’SUP.

Join us for another fun night of cheap drinks and good conversations on Thursday, January 29th!

What’SUP 2015?

Community Matters: Join us at the CSI Holiday Pop-Up Market!

Community matters. This was the fundamental belief that drove GreenPeopleTO into fruition last December, and it has been what’s kept us going throughout this crazy year. And it’s why we are thrilled to have our last event of the year be in (SUP)port of the Centre for Social Innovation Holiday Pop-Up Market!

We started this project with the goal of simply creating a space to bring people interested in the environment together to have a good time. This goal has lead us to seven Toronto events and one bus trip to the largest Climate Rally ever. But if you haven’t found time to make it out to one of our events yet (of if you have and want to come to another one), here are three reasons why the CSI Holiday Pop-Up Market is the time to join us!

 1) Get Sustainable, Local Gifts: In today’s world is basically impossible to know and understand the complete supply chain of things that you buy, and harder still to find stuff that can be considered even remotely sustainable. The Pop-up market is filled with reclaimed or recycled goods made by local artisans and at this moment taking advantage of the market externality of waste is about the only truly sustainable consumption that exists.

2) Have a great time: The hallmark of SUP events has always been to create a space where people can have relax and have fun, and the rest shall figure itself out. And by teaming up with the Centre for Social Innovation we’re able to go big with that idea. The event shall feature live music, a two unique gift exchanges, and plenty of beer and wine sold by the Coffee Pub.

3) Join our community: The Centre for Social Innovation is a perfect example of the power that community can have, which is why we’re stoked to be working with them. There is no barrier of entry here, no expectations of knowledge, just a pleasant atmosphere, smiling faces and the same belief that we can make the world a better place.

We’ve worked hard this year to create a space that we’re proud of and I think I can speak for the rest of our team when I say we’ve done just that. We’re super excited for what 2015 will have to bring, but before we get there join us for one last party!

Join us in SUPporting Local Artists!

We here at GreenPeopleTO are teaming up with the Centre for Social Innovation to create the greenest and greatest holiday shopping experience you will ever have. We’re bringing SUP back into the CSI Annex space with live music, great beer and a whole bunch of great local artists and organizations.

You can expect the same relaxed fun atmosphere that has become our calling card but this time with more space! Plus we’ll be facilitating a super awesome local gift exchange and encouraging everyone to wear their favourite (read ugliest) holiday sweater.

We’ll have a longer post about the whole event coming out next week, but for now, save the date (December 11th) and join the Facebook event.

Can’t wait to see you all!

NEXT THURSDAY: We’re Going Back To Our Roots With SUP Classic ;)

SUP is a Social, Undefined Plan to bring young (and youngish) people together and provide a relaxed, non-businessy atmosphere where people who want to see a more sustainable world can meet and have great conversations over cheap beer.

This is an awesome opportunity to meet all the great people in Toronto’s sustainability sphere in a low pressure environment. It’s our 6th #GreenPeopleTO event this year.

It is also a great opportunity to meet some of the people organizing Toronto’s buses to the People’s Climate March in NYC (More info here: buSup to New York) and to ask any questions about the trip you might have.

NEXT THURSDAY: We’re Going Back To Our Roots With SUP Classic ;)

Join us as we buSup to New York!

Summer is always a busy time of the year, especially when there’s so many events happening across a  city as big and diverse as Toronto. While we’ve been quiet for a little while, we’re gearing up for something BIG.

10556933_10201911852392002_4501720783646594271_o

THIS IS AN INVITATION TO CHANGE EVERYTHING

World leaders are heading to New York City for a UN summit on the climate crisis. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is urging governments to support an ambitious global agreement to dramatically reduce global warming pollution. In response to this challenge 350.org has called for North America’s largest climate march on Sunday, September 21st to coincide with the summit.

In collaboration with Toronto350 and Emily Hunter, #GreenPeopleTO is aiming to bring as many people from Toronto as possible to attend. We are organizing buses from Toronto to New York the weekend of September 19-21 to attend the People’s Climate March alongside our usual SUP motto of meeting people and sharing ideas/voices.

The buses will leave Toronto in the evening on Friday, September 19th, and depart New York on the evening Sunday, September 21st – maximizing our weekend away while negating any time missed from work or classes. We have optional accommodations available for Saturday night (Friday and Sunday night will be spent on the bus), or you can book your own.

To change everything, we need everyone on board.
Sunday, September 21 in New York City. Join us.

Tickets are available here through Toronto350.
*If you would like to be seated with people you’ve met at one of our events, please note #GreenPeopleTO or SUP as your group.

DO YOU WANT TO BE A CLIMATE LEADER?

We are currently recruiting Climate Leaders for the bus trip. Climate Leaders will be responsible for 10 people on the bus, informing them on how to stay connected to the climate movement and help be a mentor and support person to them while on the trip. This is an amazing opportunity to connect with Toronto’s environmentalist movement, learn critical event management and activist skills, play a critical role in one of the largest climate demonstrations in history, and have an awesome time.

BECAUSE WE LOVE SOCIAL MEDIA…

As we ramp up for the march, please generate noise using #PeoplesClimate or #ClimateMarch and #GreenPeopleTO.

The SUPosium!

SUPosium Banner1 Our next official event has arrived! In two weeks, on Thursday, July 17th, we will be hosting the SUPosium back in Harvest Noon. In our continuing effort to strengthen Toronto’s environmental community, the SUPosium brings #GreePeopleTO events into more uncharted territory (for us). The SUPosium will provide SNACKS! Yes, snacks! These snacks shall also be joined by the unassuming community building opportunities that we have become known for as well as a few short talks from some of Toronto’s vibrant sustainability scene. Following the general theme of these events, our guests, who include Lawrence Alvarez of the Toronto Tool Library, will be speaking on the importance of community within environmentalism and how strong connections with those around you can lead directly to more sustainable actions.

Doors open at 7pm. The discussion will start around 7:30pm and will last for approximately an hour. Then it’s time to relax, have a beer, and chat with some of Toronto’s best environmental minds about whatever you like!

And as always… Don’t work in the green sector? Not a problem! Never attended a green event before? Let this be your first! Want to join the environmental community? This is for you! Need a job?…have another beer.

! UPDATE !
We’re excited to announce that Cliff Davidson, Executive Director of the Toronto Urban Photography Festival (TUPF), will be joining our lineup of speakers! While TUPF has a focus on photography, events are very diverse and interdisciplinary. This is their second year of hosting the festival and of interest to our environmentally-minded audience, they’ve branched out to include a talk on nature in the city and photography, and invited the Toronto Green Community to lead a Lost Rivers photowalk. This year’s “CommUnity” theme is also highly relevant, and we’re excited for Cliff to share his experiences!
